Purpose of the Project

Since their arrival in the New World colonies in the 1500s and 1600s, black women have existed at intersections of ideas and laws relating to race, class, gender, and sexuality. In our coursework we have examined what this has meant for black women, for African Americans, for all women, and for American society. We focused on the impact then and now of: slavery and segregation, social, economic and political activities, and the Great Migration(s) to the plains and farms of the American West and to the great urban communities of the North and South. We traced the role of women, both black and white, in the development of the African American religious, educational, social, and fraternal institutions. We followed the heroics of black women's activism in the 19th and 20th centuries from abolition, suffrage and women's civil rights to birth control; women's liberation, welfare rights and environmental activism. Our topics are presented in this website in an electronic chronological survey of events from the 17th through the 20th centuries. Our chronology (and interpretations however, are specific to the experiences of African American women.)

The Cooperative Purpose

African American women have always been perceived as "strong" even in the face of great adversity. Many historians, however, have observed that black women's strength often lay in the fact that they worked together and/or "networked." This activity gave an excellent overview of how cooperative efforts can strengthen a group's effectiveness. We, as a class, worked together and formed three websites from this cooperative project. Our other two sites are:
www.iola.freeservers.com

www.africanamericansoc.freeservers.com.

You will find the link to our IOLA site at the bottom of this page, and the link for our AFRICANAMERICANSOC site on our favorite links page for your convenience.
